He was using marriage and adultery as symbols for the foundational choice between equality and hierarchy—the same pattern encoded in the Genesis creation accounts and enacted in his own death and resurrection.

This structural reading has been obscured for two millennia by interpretation that focuses exclusively on Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection as singular events, rather than as demonstrations of a universal pattern applicable at every scale.

The Text: Mark 10:1-12

Then He arose from there and came to the region of Judea by the other side of the Jordan. And multitudes gathered to Him again, and as He was accustomed, He taught them again.

The Pharisees came and asked Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” testing Him.

And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?”

They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to dismiss her.”

And Jesus answered and said to them, “Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

In the house His disciples also asked Him again about the same matter. So He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

(Mark 10:1-12, NKJV; parallel passage in Matthew 19:3-12)

The Explicit Reference to Genesis 1

Jesus quotes Genesis 1:27 directly: “male and female He created them.”

He identifies this as “from the beginning of the creation”—establishing Genesis 1 as the authoritative baseline, not Genesis 2.

This is textual evidence that Jesus treated the equality account (Genesis 1) as primary and the hierarchy account (Genesis 2: woman from man’s rib) as secondary or derivative.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Creaci%C3%B3n_de_Ad%C3%A1n_(Miguel_%C3%81ngel).jpg

The Symbolic Structure

Marriage = Day 1 Equality

“Two become one flesh”

Unity, wholeness, collaboration

What God joined together

The original design “from the beginning”

Adultery/Divorce = Day 3 Hierarchy

Fragmentation, separation, competition

“Hardness of heart” (scarcity mindset)

“Man separating” what was unified

The departure from the original design

Jesus uses the most intimate human relationship to illustrate the largest structural principle: hierarchy creates scarcity and fragmentation; equality creates abundance and unity.

Why This Has Been Obscured

The Gospels were written 40-70 years after Jesus’s death. By the time Mark composed his Gospel (likely post-70 CE, after the Jewish War), the crucifixion and resurrection had become the interpretative lens through which all of Jesus’s teachings about death and resurrection were understood.

Every time Jesus speaks about death, suffering, and rising again, it’s been read as prophecy about his own fate—not as teaching about a universal reversal pattern from hierarchy back to equality that applies at every scale: personal, social, political, theological.

Recent scholarship has begun reading Mark within its political-military context. Gabriella Gelardini’s 2026 article “Decoding Mark’s Messianic Secret with Georg Simmel” (Journal for the Study of the New Testament) analyzes Mark’s Gospel as written in post-war Rome, where openly claiming Jesus as Messiah was politically dangerous. The “messianic secret” wasn’t just about concealing identity—it was about protecting a community that believed their crucified Messiah would return in power to reverse Roman occupation.

The pattern was always there: descent into hierarchy (crucifixion, Day 3) → transition (tomb/Sabbath, Day 2) → return to equality and life (resurrection, Day 1).

But we’ve read it as only about Jesus, not as architecture he was demonstrating.

The Hardness of Your Heart

When Jesus says Moses permitted divorce “because of the hardness of your heart,” he’s identifying the scarcity mindset that accompanies hierarchy.

Hardness = inability to see abundance, inability to maintain unity, tendency toward separation and competition.

This is the Day 3 condition: scarcity thinking that drives exile, demonization, conflict.

Marriage, in Jesus’s teaching, represents the Day 1 condition: abundance thinking that enables collaboration, shared prosperity, peace.

The Political Implication

When Jesus connects marriage to “from the beginning of creation” and identifies divorce as permitted only because of hardness of heart, he’s making a claim about what is foundational and what is derivative.

Equality is original. Hierarchy is the departure.

This is why the teaching was blasphemy. Jesus wasn’t just correcting Pharisaic interpretation of divorce law. He was using the symbol of marriage to challenge the entire hierarchical religious structure—by pointing back to Genesis 1 as the authoritative baseline.

The religious authorities recognized this immediately. That’s why the marriage teaching appears in both Mark and Matthew in the context of mounting opposition that leads to Jesus’s execution.

The Three Days Pattern

The marriage/adultery symbolism connects directly to the Three Days pattern:

Genesis 1 → Genesis 2 (Descent)

Day 1: “Male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27) – Equality

Day 2: Sabbath rest – Transition

Day 3: Woman from man’s rib (Genesis 2) – Hierarchy

Jesus’s Death → Resurrection (Reversal)

Day 3: Crucifixion (hierarchy and death at worst)

Day 2: Tomb/Sabbath (transition)

Day 1: Resurrection (return to life and equality)

The Symbols Jesus Used

Marriage = Unity restored (Day 1)

Adultery = Fragmentation maintained (Day 3)

Resurrection Reframed

If marriage symbolizes Day 1 equality and adultery symbolizes Day 3 hierarchy, then resurrection isn’t just about Jesus coming back to life—it’s about the reversal of the hierarchical pattern itself.

The crucifixion enacted hierarchy at its worst: empire, religious authority, betrayal, torture, execution.

The resurrection demonstrated the return to Day 1: life, equality, abundance.

And Jesus taught this pattern before his death. The marriage/divorce teaching in Mark 10 appears before the passion narrative. He was teaching the structure, not just prophesying his fate.

Why This Matters

For 2000 years, Christian eschatology has largely focused on waiting for Jesus to return and enact the reversal.

But if Jesus was teaching a pattern, not just prophesying a singular event, then the work is different:

Building equality-based systems (political, economic, social)

Rejecting scarcity thinking that drives conflict

Recognizing hierarchy as the deviation, not the norm

Understanding abundance as collaborative, not competitive

The marriage/adultery symbolism gives us Jesus’s own vocabulary for this choice.

We’ve been reading it as ethics. It’s architecture.

References

Mark 10:1-12; Matthew 19:3-12 (NKJV)

Genesis 1:27 (“Male and female He created them”)

Genesis 2:21-24 (Woman from rib; two become one flesh)

Gelardini, Gabriella. 2026. “Decoding Mark’s Messianic Secret with Georg Simmel.” Journal for the Study of the New Testament. https://doi.org/10.1177/0142064X261428105

This framework is presented in four submissions to the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion.
