It deserves to be stated plainly before it is examined.

The argument runs like this: Genesis 2 is not a departure from Genesis 1 but its natural development — one level of created order giving way to another, more structured and more differentiated. God’s ordering of creation into authority and relationship — husband and wife, parent and child, ruler and people — is the expression of his nature working itself out through history. Equality without structure produces chaos. The ordering of things is not the problem. It is the solution.

This is not a fringe position. It has serious theological defenders. And the intuition behind it is real. Something in human experience recognises the threat of undifferentiated disorder and reaches for the most familiar available structure to contain it.

The question is not whether the intuition is real. It is. The question is whether the structure being reached for is appropriate to the moment — and whether the level of complexity it represents is the destination or a stage in an ongoing emergence toward something more coherent still.

To answer that question honestly requires going back to first principles. Not to what the tradition built on top of the text. Not to what centuries of interpretation accumulated around it. To what the text actually says.

Genesis 1. The beginning.

The opening condition is chaos — תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ in the Hebrew, formless and void, the deep before anything exists. And then the ordering principle moves across it. Not by force. Not by conquest. By the word — by meaning itself entering the formless void and generating structure from within it.

What emerges are the first levels of complexity. Differentiation without subordination — light and darkness, land and sea, day and night, each distinct, each in its proper place, none subordinate to the other. And on the sixth day, the culmination of this first emergence: male and female, created simultaneously, equally, in the image of God.

Not one from the other. Not one over the other. Both together. In the image of God.

And God looked at everything he had made — including this — and said it was very good. Not good. Very good. The superlative arrives at the moment the first emergence reaches its fullest expression — the radical equality of the sixth day.

That is the first principle. That is what the text actually says.

Then Genesis 2 begins. And the opening condition is again formless and void — the earth without plants, without rain, without a man to work the ground. The chaos condition returns. And from it a second level of complexity emerges — one organised differently from the first.

This is not a fall. It is a bifurcation — the first splitting of the original stable trajectory into something new. The man is formed first, alone. The woman is formed from him, named by him, defined in relation to him. A structured hierarchy enters — husband and wife, the garden and its boundaries, the tree and its prohibition.

Scientists who study complex systems — from weather patterns to population dynamics — have observed this same pattern across nature. The mathematics of it is well established. The principle is not invented here.

And here is the critical point. At a bifurcation the original attractor does not simply disappear. It becomes repulsive. The system that tries to return directly to the original stable point finds that the very thing it is reaching for now pushes it away. Every attempt to force the return generates more instability rather than less.

This is not a failure of will or a failure of faith. It is the nature of complex systems after a bifurcation has occurred. You cannot un-bifurcate. The original trajectory is no longer accessible from this side of it.

From Genesis 2 onward the whole story is the struggle toward the next emergence — toward a level of complexity that can recover the principle of the sixth day not as a return to the original simplicity but as something that incorporates everything the interval contained. The Tower of Babel. The empires and theocracies and prophets and exiles. The cross. Each one a moment in the ongoing movement of the system toward a coherence it has not yet fully reached.

Revelation tells us we are still on the way. The vision it offers is not a description of something that has already fully arrived. There is still understanding that is missing — a revelation yet to come that will put everything into perspective.

The Tower of Babel is the clearest illustration in the tradition itself of what happens when the miracle model is applied — when the attempt is made to reach the divine level by constructing a sufficiently impressive external form.

The builders have unity, technology, and will. They are applying the copied pattern directly — build the external structure, reach heaven, establish a permanent order. Make a name that will endure.

But the project fails from within. Not because God is arbitrary. Because the complexity of what they are building exceeds the capacity of their shared language to coordinate it. The confusion of tongues is not simply imposed from outside — it is generated from within by the gap between the ambition of the project and the language available to describe it.

And perhaps — this is worth sitting with — a single common language for that level of complexity was never possible. The diversity of languages, traditions, perspectives and peoples that emerged from Babel is not a problem to be solved by finding the right common language and imposing it. It is the feature of a system complex enough to be genuinely alive.

A new emergent level of complexity is recognisable precisely because it contains relations between entities at the same level that are independent of the layers below it. Liberal democracy works because it does not depend on the character of any particular ruler — the rules govern the rulers regardless of who they are. Remove a president and the system continues. That independence from the lower level is the mark of genuine emergence.

Theocracy collapses back to a lower level because it depends entirely on the theological correctness of the person at the top. Remove the godly king and the organising principle goes with him. It is constituted by the lower level rather than independent of it. That is why every theocracy in history has been as good or as bad as the person holding power — and why the death or corruption of that person brings the system down.

The Tower of Babel builders were not wrong to want to reach heaven. They were wrong about the mechanism — and about the level of complexity required to hold what they were reaching for.

This pattern — the attempt to recover the original principle by copying the external forms of an imagined past — appears across human experience with remarkable consistency.

Plato described it in the allegory of the cave. Prisoners who have never seen the sun watch shadows cast on a wall and mistake the shadows for the thing that casts them. They are not stupid. The shadows are real shadows of real objects. But they have confused the representation for the principle it represents. When a prisoner escapes and sees the sun directly he cannot return and describe what he has seen in terms the others will accept. His account is incompatible with everything their experience has taught them to trust.

The prisoners are not the problem. The cave is.

Anthropologists documented a related pattern in the Pacific islands after the Second World War. Islanders who had witnessed military supply operations — planes landing, cargo unloading — built bamboo airstrips, carved wooden instruments, lit signal fires. They were copying the external forms of the supply operation with genuine precision and genuine earnestness. The correlation they had observed was real. The error was in the mechanism — the belief that the forms produced the outcome rather than the other way around.

And a child learning to walk. The falling is not the failure. It is the instability through which the new organising principle of upright movement emerges. The child who learns to walk on real ground — falling, recovering, adjusting — carries something the copied pattern never can. The recovery is built into the gait. The knowledge of instability is what makes the stability genuine.

You cannot skip the falling. You cannot download the gait and bypass the process. The emergence requires the instability.

This is not only a question for one tradition.

Every serious tradition has its own account of the original principle, its own description of the bifurcation from it, and its own vision of the restoration. The Islamic tawhid — the absolute unity and equality before God. The Jewish tikkun olam — the repair of what was broken. The Buddhist original mind before the arising of the separate self. Each arrives at the same structural recognition from its own first principles — that the original condition was one of coherence and equality, that the hierarchical descent was a bifurcation from it, and that the movement of history is the long struggle toward a new emergence that can recover what was lost at a higher level of complexity.

None of these traditions is saying exactly the same thing. The diversity of the pointing is not a problem to be resolved into a single common language. It is the system being complex enough to be genuinely alive.

The New Jerusalem that Revelation describes is not built from below. It comes down from heaven — the direction is not upward construction but downward emergence into the conditions that can receive it.

It has twelve gates named for the twelve tribes of Israel — the Jewish foundations. Its twelve foundation stones bear the names of the twelve apostles — the Christian foundations. Both simultaneously present. Neither superseding the other.

Its gates are never shut. There is no night. Access is permanent and unconditional.

And most remarkably — in the New Jerusalem there are no religious gatekeepers. No institution stands between the human and the divine deciding who enters and on what terms. The sacred is simply present, available to all who come through gates that are never shut. The glory and honour of all nations flows into the city — not filtered, not adjudicated, not conditional on theological correctness or institutional membership.

The foundations hold the twelve tribes and the twelve apostles simultaneously. The gates face all four directions. The leaves of the tree heal all nations. The light requires no lamp or sun because it is simply there.

That is the emergent level the whole arc of the tradition has been pointing toward. Not the conquest of Jerusalem by one tradition. The city that belongs to everyone because it belongs to no one exclusively.

This is the theological foundation of the separation of church / synagogue / mosque and state. Not a secular imposition on the sacred. The sacred vision itself, carried in the oldest texts of all three traditions, pointing toward a governance that protects everyone’s access to the divine precisely by ensuring that no single tradition administers it on behalf of everyone else.

And Paul, writing before Revelation, already names it precisely — the Jerusalem above is free. Not the Jerusalem of law and hierarchy and institutional control. The Jerusalem of freedom. Which is the mother of us all.

Jesus showed the way — not by completing the journey for everyone but by demonstrating what the sixth day looks like when it is lived completely in the actual conditions of the actual world.

The Sermon on the Mount is not a legal code to be copied and imposed. It is a map of the first principle in action — what the equality of the sixth day of Genesis 1 looks like enacted in a world still caught in the Genesis 2 descent. Blessed are the peacemakers. Blessed are the meek. The last shall be first. Not commands. Descriptions of the next emergent level being lived in advance of its full arrival.

He is Alpha and Omega — the same one from the beginning to the end, unchanged. The Second Coming is not a future event on a linear timeline requiring external conditions to be engineered before it can occur. It is a presence — a parousia, the Greek word meaning not an instant of arrival but a duration, a continuing condition. The day and the hour cannot be known not because the information is hidden but because the question itself is malformed. The categories of linear time do not apply to the one who stands outside linear time.

The plane has already landed. It has been there for two thousand years. The bamboo runway being built with wars and school bombings and Crusader tattoos will not make it land again.

It never left.

We are not at the sixth day yet. The process is real, the instability is real, the struggle is real. The bifurcations of history have generated genuine complexity and genuine suffering and there is no simple path back to the original attractor.

But we know what we are aiming for. The text tells us plainly and the tradition has been carrying it forward through every bifurcation without losing it entirely. Male and female. Equal. In the image of God. Very good.

And the New Jerusalem toward which the whole movement points is not a return to that original simplicity. It is the emergence at a higher level of complexity that incorporates everything the interval contained — all the traditions, all the bifurcations, all the chaos — into a city whose gates are never shut, whose foundations hold all the traditions simultaneously, whose leaves heal all the nations, and whose light requires no temple to mediate it.

The chaos is not the enemy of that emergence. It is the threshold to the emergence of new levels of complexity.

The question is what we choose to build in the time between.

Don’t let the republic fall from within.

There is a serious theological argument for the position that hierarchy is divinely ordained.
